Daytrip, Playing baseball at the bottom of the lake

Wow, another great day a week after visiting the Coffeepot Crater with granddaughters. This time my daughter Jen came with as we headed out to see what the bottom of a lake looks like while the lake was drawn down for the winter.

Skies were threatening but we went anyway, knowing that many times fun things can happen.

We drove a gravel road through ranch lands, looking for John Wayne.

What we found was bright color...

In the form of sweet Zoe

Our first stop was at a former camp spot. Yes, the view was still there, thankfully.

We drove down onto the lake bottom and along next to the river that makes this lake, the Owyhee River, in it's original form before being dammed.

Jen noticed steam coming off this small stream, hot springs!

Mud cakes, humongous!

We had walked up into a cove and were looking down through a crack in the rock, imagining fish that might swim there when under water.

Looking down, we found a couple of fishing lures, lost by fishermen in boats above our heads.

A second hot spring that will be underwater again next spring when the lake fills up from winter snow melt. Two springs in one sentence, different meanings. Don't you love the English language?

The girls wanted to get out of the water for a while. Well...

Then we drove back up the lake a bit for lunch and a game...

of baseball.

So there we were, playing baseball at the bottom of the lake where next summer we will catch fish from a boat 50 feet over our heads. Funny how that works out.

After lunch we put the lake in the rear view mirror and drove up canyon for a hike.

It was a very scenic hike. The last time I was here there was snow on the ground.

Put on your zoom glasses to see Parker at the top of the dirt hill.

The wet stuff finally showed up, hoods were used.

It rained off and on during the drive home...

letting up in time to stop at a small playground on the Snake River

And that was the end of a perfect day, thanks for reading. Jen, Zoe, Dave (Baba) and Parker

Day tripping with Granddaughters to see Coffeepot Crater

My wife has taken a 3 month travel nurse assignment back in Phoenix and living with our youngest daughter Jess and her family, 1 year old Huxon and husband Gary. That leaves me here with our oldest daughter Jen and her family with twin granddaughters Zoe and Parker. It is always my lucky day when I get to Babasit, yes I'm Baba, and take them to really cool places. This day I was taking them to Coffeepot Crater in SE Oregon.

Bailey, our little dog, has gotten diabetes and gone blind as well as lost her sense of smell. You see she got Covid at the same time as Lynn last Thanksgiving while out camping in Utah. She relies a lot on hearing...and touch as she gives a high five to Parker.

Our first view of the crater and huge lava field

Into the depths

We were having a lava fun as we hiked about, heading over to another small crater in the distant left.

We came to a very cool almost manmade looking pathway, made by flowing lava

Standing on ripples of lava it was easy to imagine it as hot and flowing, melting our tennis shoes

A view from the north side

Seven going on eight, growing up too fast for this ol Grandpa

We had lunch in the camper with the top down making it extra cozy

Boy this trail to the top was a real quad burner. Even ol Duke was complaining it was too ruff

Near and far become one

I gave the girls my small camera to use, they loved it

From the east side, I was glad not to have been here when it blew it's top

Another small crater pocket, it was an interesting place for Baba and Girls!

I dogeared this picture...

I don't know Girls, is this selfie stick thing working?

ZZ Top impression

Lava Tag was invented. Duke was like "Whatever"

Almost obsidian, I was thinking it didn't get quite hot enough to finish off as volcanic glass, but came close

Climbing for a different view

I stopped so the Girls could goof around at being cowgirls

And cow doodie tag was played. I can't let these young ladies get too sissified now can I?

Finally heading for the barn, my precious cargo was worn out

Thanks for reading...
